iEat Review: BJs Restaurants and Brewhouse (Valley Stream, NY)

BJ's Restaurants and Brewhouse Valley Stream, NY

Restaurant Vibe:  3.5 / 5.0
As you enter this cavernous space, you are reminded of a Midwest brewery run for generations by a family loyal to a certain hop - to - malt ratio and choice for starters, none of which applies to this place.   It's a loud place with nondescript tables, chairs, and booths.  The silverware is wrapped vacuously, waiters are a tad bit too frivolous, and monitors flicker jarring sports commentary all around.  In the middle of this fair what catches you unaware is a massive blackboard with an impressive list of drafts (whether they have it all or not is left to be found out) classified by their styles - from pale ales to stouts.  The fact that all this produces a combined effect of transporting one into some inner city of Michigan while being in NY suburb next to Queens deserves some credit.

Kona Big Wave Golden Ale 2.0 / 5.0
This is coming from an amateur in the esoteric world of beer, this golden ale is pretty to look at with its rich blond color and a thick head.  However, the taste is so plain (or so blonde) that it leaves no footprint whatsoever.

New Orleans Jambalaya 1.0 / 5.0
There's bad recipes and then there's this monstrosity.  Jambalaya traces its roots to French quarters in New Orleans with disputed origins.  It was either a failed attempt at paella or at jumbling leftovers together with added seasonings to make the sum total more palatable than its individual ingredients.  From the look and taste of this specific Jambalaya, it was perhaps a failed attempt at everything.  The meats and the underlying bedding of rice were absolutely dissociated from each other, exceptionally bland, and simply put, aesthetically unappealing.  What added insult to the injury was the careless sprinkle of paprika (or criminally mild chili powder) with its raw bitterness intact.  If this recipe is any indication of rest of the dishes on the menu, this place is in big trouble.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Renewal Process Delay 2016

Renewal applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (and subsequent employment authorization) is facing a massive backlog especially at the Nebraska Service Center for USCIS.  This delay effects the applications submitted between Feb and May of this year.

Now what?

First make sure it's been at least 105 days since you filed your application, AND, you haven't received any concrete correspondence from USCIS, other than notice stating your application has been received (with correct fees), biometrics appointment, etc. (the administration stuff).  In this case, read on.

What an applicant should / could do?

The bad news is that there is not much an applicant can do.  Let's go through available options for some unnerved souls:

1. Check case status online using your receipt number(s).  Watch out for the updates frequently although USCIS doesn't provide information for minor progress.  When a decision is made, however, status will be updated.  Expect an official notice in your mail within couple of days after that.

2.  Representatives reached through USCIS National Customer Service Number (1-800-375-5283) won't allow the applicant to raise a ticket because there is an official backlog notice from USCIS.   In other words, USCIS has already acknowledged the delay and hence don't want thousands of applicants raising tickets. But give them a call - maybe you will get lucky and they will raise a ticket (which in turn will not really do much) or give you some useful updates (highly unlikely).

3.  Issuing a formal complaint with DHS Ombudsman Office will most likely not yield any better results either.   You should still formally issue your complaint (by clicking here) because it will ensure your concern is formally recorded and you get a platform to provide a legitimate reason for your desperation.   You may or may not hear back from them.  Before you submit a complaint, make sure it's been at least 105 days since you filed your application, and that USCIS is not awaiting a response from you.

4. Prepare for the worst case scenario - i.e. expiration of  your employment authorization and accrual of unlawful presence.  Have a serious discussion (immediately!) with your employer surrounding the rehiring procedure once you receive a renewal.   Once your employment authorization expires and you haven't received your renewal, your employment will be terminated and you will NOT be able to work (including work without pay to not disrupt your assignment).   However, you might be able to get some sort of temporary suspension or leave of absence to minimize the impact of your "limbo" period (completely dependent on the employer).   Also, during this "limbo" period, your driver's license will be invalid.  Therefore, DO NOT drive during this period since it is a serious misdemeanor and that is the last thing you want!  Also, DO NOT fly domestically (internationally is out of the question unless you don't want to be readmitted to US!).

5. Hope you receive a decision before your current employment authorization expires :)  And last but not the least, DO NOT PANIC.   If you do not receive a decision on time, use the time productively - realign yourself, rethink about career, outline next steps, etc.  Most likely, you will get it very soon and will be able to get back into the grind immediately!

Could I be deported during the time of unlawful presence?

Yes if you have committed a crime, major felony or multiple major misdemeanors.   If none of that applies to you, don't sweat it.

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions / concerns about this subject.

iReview: The Conjuring (2013)

Starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor. Written by Chad and Carrey Hayes. Directed by James Wan.

If I had directed this film, I'd be one proud young lad.  From the inception to execution, the movie is a smart move all the way.  In this gizmo drenched and uncomfortably transparent world, establishing a horror story in present times is an awkward affair.  Perhaps that's one reason why most of the "scary" films are subterfuge for some weird psychotic experience a character once had in his/her life because ghosts don't stand a chance in the age of Facebook and androids (of course, there are exceptions).

The Conjuring is set in 70's burbs, isolating us from the intruding eyes of technology and hullabaloo of a city.  Throw a grainy dated film look and you're asking for some paranormal activity.   The Conjuring is not pretentious. It believes in everything it depicts - from Satan to demons to spirits. This unabashed conviction bleeds into a viewer as a very personal macabre tale. Simply put, we live their world.

Ed and Lorraine Warren are a couple who takes pride as "demonologists" but have had their fare share of close calls. Ed, hesitant to take on any case due to the toll their work has taken on Lorraine, succumbs to Carolyn's helpless plea. Carolyn moved to a dilapidated house with her husband, Roger, and four children. Soon after relocation, they found something in the house was awry.  And after some gleefully scary sequences, we find out what the real problem is.

The movie isn't path breaking in terms of script and plot.  But the execution (like repeated use of zoom, the grainy look) is so reminiscent of yesteryear's classic horror films, a viewer is sucked into the center of drama. Such films, with so deep belief in the occult, are only suitable for a period drama not because they are too ludicrous for contemporary films but the isolation and simplicity of the old times hosts darkness with much more welcoming hands.   I'd say, this one is a winner.
